Skin dehydration

Thirst

The most common advice for maintaining radiant facial skin is to drink a lot of water.

A sufficient amount of water is important for the efficient physical functioning of the body, but we should not forget that the skin, as the largest organ in the human body, also needs a sufficient amount of moisture which it receives through the circulatory system and also through absorption from the air and external application. It is important to know that dry skin needs to be treated externally as well, and the first step to this is an accurate diagnosis.

We all know the constant mantra – drinking a lot, daily use of a sun protection factor, regular use of moisturizer – we learn to know our skin type from a young age – normal, oily, mixed, dry – and we choose the care products accordingly. But what happens when, despite the fact that you strictly use the care products designed for your skin type, your facial skin is oily and full of pimples one day and very dry the next? The answer to this is: You are probably one of those many women whose skin type was not properly diagnosed as a result of being diagnosed according to traditional and restrictive categories.

And now, learn the secret category – dried skin.

Dehydration – what is it ?

We learn that the number of women suffering from dry facial skin is steadily increasing. The main reason for this is the drying air conditioning systems which are found in almost every home and office, and which operate all year round.

The human body effectively fights diseases, but the first thing that will cause our bodies to collapse is lack of water. The laws of survival state that a person will survive without food for three days but will be able to last without drinking for only 3 hours. After this period of time, we begin to suffer from a variety of symptoms such as headache, dizziness, feeling faint and dryness of the facial skin. This is the body’s way of signaling us to drink.

Drinking the recommended daily amount of water will indeed mean that our bodies will not dry out, but when it comes to facial skin, drinking a lot of water will solve the problem only partially.

The misconception about dehydrated skin is that it is another term for dry skin. But this perception is completely contrary to reality. Dehydrated skin may indeed have a dry appearance, so the common mistake is to match this skin type with skin care products that are rich in oil. But the dry appearance of this skin type is actually due to a lack of water and not a lack of oil. The use of oil-enriched creams is actually similar to pouring water on saturated soil. Dry skin is rich in oil, so in fact these products will not absorb into the skin and will simply remain on the top layer of the skin. As a result, the facial skin will get a shiny and very unflattering look. Beyond that, the extra portion of oil in combination with unnecessary dead skin cells that are in the drier areas of the skin, stick to the pores and the result is outbreaks of acne and pimples.

The key to diagnosing dehydrated skin, as opposed to dry skin, is the frequent appearance of sores and pimples.
Dehydrated skin may suffer from symptoms, such as a feeling of skin stretching, scaling and the appearance of wrinkles, symptoms that are usually associated with dry skin. But the acne is the key – pimples need oil, so if dry patches and pimples appear on the skin, the chances are that the skin is dehydrated. If there are no pimples, it is most likely dry skin.

Treatment of dry skin

It is important to use an effective and good moisturizer. It is recommended to avoid using oil-enriched creams. A night cream should be used to prevent fluid loss during the night, and an eye and neck cream to smooth lines and wrinkles.
A gentle home peeling should be used. Dehydration of the skin causes the accumulation of dead skin cells on the upper layer of the skin, therefore gentle exfoliation once a week is essential.
