The benefits of salicylic acid
Skincare
Salicylic acid is an organic acid used as one of the most important plant hormones, it is the most common beta hydroxy acid. Salicylic acid is named after the willow tree (Salix) in which bark it is found in high concentration. The acid is able to relieve human pain, and already 2,500 years ago man knew how to use the bark of the willow tree for this purpose. Salicylic acid is a medicine with a keratolytic effect. It works by breaking the keratin, a protein that forms the hard outer layers of the skin and leads to the peeling of the dead skin cells that have hardened and that form the surface area of the skin. In addition, it accelerates the regeneration of skin cells and thus contributes to the healing of skin problems such as: Warts, psoriasis, dandruff, seborrhea, and removal of hard and rough skin.
Salicylic acid is suitable for the treatment of acne – keratolytic activity leads to the opening of clogged hair follicles, which cause the formation of pimples. The acid reduces the oiliness of the skin, encourages the shedding of dead skin cells, which helps the process of renewing new cells. It is a safe and effective treatment for mild acne and oily skin. An important feature of the acid is the breakdown of the intracellular “glue” of the outer layer of the skin (the stratum corneum). The BHA (beta hydroxy acids) affects the upper layers of the skin .
In doing so, it allows healthier skin cells to rise to the surface. Removing dead cells improves the texture of the skin, its tone, and allows the moisturizer to be better absorbed into the skin. The “Drama Clear” series for oily and acne-prone skin from Landau Laboratories contains salicylic acid in concentrations suitable for the skin type.
